The four habits
1. Don't flush or pour the wrong things. The EPA's do-not-flush list: cooking grease or oil, non-flushable wipes (including "flushable" wipes, which are not actually septic-safe), photographic solutions, feminine hygiene products, condoms, dental floss, diapers, cigarette butts, coffee grounds, cat litter, paper towels, and pharmaceuticals. Household chemicals (gasoline, oil, pesticides, antifreeze, paint or paint thinner) should never go down a drain connected to a septic system, because they kill the bacteria the tank depends on to treat waste.
2. Use water efficiently. Every drop of water a household sends down its pipes ends up in the septic system, and overloading the field with water is a leading cause of failure. High-efficiency toilets (1.6 gallons per flush or less), fixing leaks promptly, and spreading laundry loads out over the week instead of running several in a row all reduce the daily load on the field. On soil already rated "Very limited," reducing hydraulic load is one of the few things a homeowner directly controls that meaningfully extends a marginal field's working life.
3. Protect the field from traffic, roots, and roof water. Don't park or drive on the drain field; the weight compacts soil and can crush pipes. Plant trees a safe distance away so roots don't invade the lines. And keep roof drains, sump pumps, and other rainwater drainage systems away from the drain-field area, so storm water doesn't add to what the field already has to handle.
